The Simple Truth

When your child is struggling – whether it’s a physical health problem, a mental health crisis, or a condition that needs investigating – the last thing any parent should face is a waiting list measured in months. Or years.

This guide is for parents who want straight answers. What does family private medical insurance for children really look like on the NHS in 2026? What does a family private medical insurance policy actually do? And is it worth it?

We’ll be direct with you. The data is stark – and once you understand it, the case for private family cover becomes difficult to argue with. Family health insurance is becoming essential for parents who can’t afford long NHS waits.

The Paediatric Gap: The Numbers Most Parents Haven’t Seen

The community paediatric services waiting list has tripled in size since October 2022. By mid-2025, 326,000 children in England were waiting for community health services – and the wait for many of them was measured not in weeks, but in months and years.

The community paediatric service – which primarily handles neurodevelopmental assessments for conditions like ADHD and autism, as well as general paediatric concerns – saw its waiting list grow by over 120,000 between October 2022 and July 2025. Sixteen out of 92 providers report that over 80% of their young patients have been waiting more than 18 weeks.

Children’s Mental Health: The Crisis Nobody Warned Us About

The statistics on children’s mental health waiting times are, frankly, alarming – and they deserve to be said plainly rather than buried in caveats.

In the 2023/24 financial year, 78,577 young people referred to CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services) waited over a year for treatment. Of those, 34,191 waited more than two years.

One year is a very long time in a child’s life. Delays are not abstract – they have real consequences for real young people. – Professor Kapil Sayal, University of Nottingham

Nearly half (44%) of CAMHS referrals are rejected because children don’t meet the threshold for specialist support – leaving families in a painful gap between what their child needs and what the system will provide.

How Family Health Insurance Speeds Up Care for Children

With a family private medical insurance policy, the timelines look entirely different.

  • Private Paediatric Care Consultations: typically within a week of referral
  • Children’s mental health support: direct access to therapists and specialists, without waiting for a CAMHS referral that may or may not be accepted
  • Digital GP for your child: same-day or next-day appointments, from home – no waiting room, no three-week wait
  • Diagnostics (blood tests, scans): usually within days
  • Physiotherapy and specialist nursing for children

Skipping the Referral Merry-Go-Round

Any parent who’s tried to access children’s mental health support through the NHS will recognise this pattern: GP appointment (two weeks wait), referral submitted, referral rejected or redirected, try again, wait again, assessment, wait list, first appointment – six months later.

Private cover typically lets you bypass this process entirely. You see the specialist directly. If your child needs a talking therapy, you access it. If they need a consultant paediatrician, you book one. The bureaucratic friction that costs NHS families months of worry is simply removed.

Private cover gives your children immediate access to talking therapies and specialists without the ‘referral merry-go-round.’

What a Family PMI Policy Typically Covers

  • Unlimited Digital GP access for the whole family – 365 days a year, often same-day
  • Paediatric specialist consultations and follow-up
  • Children’s mental health: therapy, psychiatry, and crisis support pathways
  • Diagnostic tests, scans, and blood work for children
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
  • Inpatient and day-case treatment at private facilities
  • Prescription delivery to your local pharmacy

Policies vary in what they cover and at what cost. As your independent broker, we compare the full market to find the right balance of cover and affordability for your family’s specific situation.

What About Cost?

Family policies are priced based on the ages and health history of the adults on the policy – children are often included at low or no additional cost, depending on the insurer and the policy.

The cost of a policy almost always looks different when you consider it against the alternative: the stress of waiting, the impact on your child’s development, the school days missed, the family strain of navigating a system that’s at breaking point.

We’re not here to scare you into buying something. We’re here to give you the information to make the right decision for your family – and then to do the legwork of finding the best policy if you decide to go ahead.
